The lookout Day
Each day at The Lookout is rooted in curiosity and the natural world. Children follow a gentle rhythm of play, discovery, and shared experiences. From muddy wellies and outdoor adventures to quiet moments of wonder as they notice the changing seasons. Our practitioners nurture independence, confidence, and resilience by encouraging children to make choices, try things for themselves, and celebrate every success along the way. With nature as our classroom and relationships at the heart of all we do, children leave each day not only with muddy knees and big smiles, but with the skills and self-belief they need to thrive.
Drop Off
We know mornings can sometimes feel a little rushed, so we’re here to make drop-off as smooth, friendly, and reassuring as possible. You’ll be greeted at the door by one of our lovely team members, ready with a warm smile and time for a quick chat — whether it’s to share something important or simply what you got up to that morning. Your child will then head off to find a friend, enjoy breakfast, or snuggle in for a welcome cuddle with their key person. So you can start your day, heading to work happy, knowing your little one is safe, settled, and ready for fun!
Child Led Play
At The Lookout, play isn’t just part of the day — it is the day. With long, uninterrupted periods of play, children have the time to explore deeply, wonder, investigate, and lead their own learning. Our indoor and outdoor environments are thoughtfully designed with natural materials, open-ended resources, and cosy spaces that spark curiosity, imagination, and connection.
From den-building and potion-mixing to fireside storytelling and creative making, every experience grows from play and discovery. Practitioners play alongside children, listening closely, extending ideas, and offering gentle guidance when needed. This balance of freedom and support helps children build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning — allowing them to flourish as explorers, creators, and thinkers of the future.

Meal Times
Mealtimes at The Lookout are a family and social occassions that bring everyone together. Snack is a relaxed, rolling opportunity where children choose when to join, helping to chop vegetables or prepare food for friends — developing independence and care for others along the way. Lunch and tea are shared around the table with staff and children enjoying food together, trying new things, and chatting about their day. Older children serve themselves, helping lay the tables and modelling to the little ones, and out youngest little explorers get wonderful role models to learn from, just like a family dining table. Throughout our days you might also find us cooking scrambled eggs over the fire, baking homemade biscuits, or blending wild, foraged garlic into pesto, celebrating food through joyful, seasonal experiences.
Focus Time
Focus times at The Lookout are gentle, purposeful moments woven into the rhythm of the day. These are opportunities for our team to build on children’s interests and extend their learning in meaningful ways. It might be heading outdoors to move like leaves in the wind after hearing it rustle through the trees, or writing letters home after sharing a beautiful story about family and walking together to the postbox. These moments are never forced, but carefully and thoughtfully offered, embedding rich learning within the children’s play and natural curiosity.

Outdoor learning
Outdoor learning is at the heart of life at The Lookout, for children of all ages, including our littlest ones. From woodland adventures and muddy slides to rain-catching, bug hunting, and welly walks, every day brings fresh opportunities to explore and connect with nature. Babies might snuggle under the trees, feel the textures of the forest floor, or listen to birdsong while older children gather around the campfire, cook porridge, build shelters, or go bird spotting. In every season, the garden and woodland spaces invite awe and wonder, encouraging children to care for nature as they play.
Through these experiences, children build resilience, confidence, and independence, learning to take measured risks, make decisions, and see themselves as capable explorers of their world.
Sleep and Rest
At The Lookout, we believe that good sleep — and restful downtime — is essential for growing minds and bodies. Our rooms are thoughtfully designed to transform into cosy, peaceful spaces, with soft mats, gentle lighting, and calming music. Some children even drift off in our outdoor den, wrapped up warm and snuggled beneath the trees. When little ones first join us, we follow their home sleep routines closely, ensuring they feel safe and settled. As they grow, they naturally adjust to group naps after lunch, often cuddled up near friends, because we know yawns are contagious! For children who no longer need a nap, we offer quiet, nurturing spaces where they can relax, unwind, and rest. Older children who no longer nap will enjoy calming yoga, meditation, and peaceful story times to help recharge.

Pick up and Reflections
At The Lookout, we see pick-up time as more than just the end of the day, it’s a chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate. Each afternoon, families receive a daily post on Famly, with photos, stories, and highlights of the children’s adventures, alongside practical details like how they’ve eaten and slept. That way, pick-ups can be all about sharing in your little one’s day, the funny moments, the proud achievements, and the small discoveries. And if you have something you’d like to discuss, our managers’ doors are always open, whether it’s a quick chat at collection or a longer meeting arranged at a time that works for you.
