Outdoor Play
At The Lookout, outdoor play is part of everyday life — for all ages, from our tiniest explorers to our bold adventurers. Rain, shine, or muddy puddle — we’re out there! Babies might be snuggled up for a story under the trees, feeling the breeze on their cheeks, or exploring sensory trays in the shade. As they grow, they join in with digging, crawling through tunnels, or watching bugs up close.
Older children climb, build dens, race through long grass, mix up muddy recipes, and head off on mini adventures in the garden. From gardening and bug hunts to puddle jumping and tree spotting, every day brings new discoveries led by your child’s curiosity. We head out in all seasons — noticing changes in nature, feeling the wind, and learning through it all. Because at The Lookout, nature isn’t just a backdrop — it’s where learning begins.
Woodland wonders…
Our woodland is a place of adventure, wonder, and wild imagination — where muddy knees and rosy cheeks are all part of the day. Children whittle sticks, balance on slacklines, dig deep holes, and build epic dens with friends. They cook on the fire, sip hot chocolate or our special magic moon milk, and create mud pies and petal cakes in the forest kitchen.
Whether they’re hiding in the trees, rustling through long grass, or simply watching smoke curl up into the sky, the woods offer space to breathe, explore, and grow. These experiences build resilience, confidence, and a deep connection to nature — and for many of our children, it’s the best part of their day.
The Tinker Station & Outdoor Creations…
Our Tinker Station is a place where big ideas come to life — with real tools, real materials, and real purpose. Here, children saw, hammer, screw and build with wood, learning to manage risk and use tools safely under close guidance. From bug hotels and bird feeders to wild inventions and wooden robots — the creations are as imaginative as the minds behind them.
Outdoors, children design and build on a larger scale — from obstacle courses to pulley systems, dens to nature-inspired art installations. It’s messy, hands-on, open-ended learning that builds confidence, independence, and a deep sense of pride. Because when children are trusted to create with real materials, their ideas grow — and so do they.
Gardening and Growing…
Our garden is full of little hands digging, planting, watering, and wondering. From sowing seeds to picking strawberries, children are involved in every part of the growing journey — learning where food comes from and building care, patience, and responsibility along the way.
We grow herbs, vegetables, fruits and flowers throughout the seasons, and children are encouraged to taste what they’ve grown — from crunchy sugar snap peas to minty tea, or even courgette muffins they’ve helped to bake.
Gardening offers rich opportunities for learning across all areas — from maths and science to language, wellbeing, and sensory exploration. It also nurtures a deep respect for the natural world and the rhythms of the seasons. Because at The Lookout, we don’t just grow plants — we grow curious, confident, connected children.
